The 2014 Met Gala: Gowns, Pants & Crop Tops, Oh My!

On Monday we saw yet another “fashion prom” come and go. Better known as the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute gala, or Met gala, the yearly event didn’t disappoint. As always, along with glamour and sophistication, weirdness and questionable choices followed. There were those that followed the theme and those that didn’t (such as gala rule-maker herself, Anna Wintour).

This year’s theme was Charles James: Beyond Fashion. Seeing as Charles James was a mid-century designer of iconic ball gowns, you’d expect to see exactly that. There were some ball gowns, but being an unpredictable crowd, there were of course other looks that included pants, short dresses and crop tops.

Not being one to stick to the rules, I actually liked most of the looks that went against the theme. Ball gowns just aren’t my cup of tea, as pretty as they may be (did not mean for that to rhyme, but I’ll go with it). That being said, below are some of the looks seen at this year’s Met gala, in no particular order.

I’ll discuss my top picks in my next post, but in the meantime, who were your favourites? Let me know!

1 Miu Miu Dress. 3 Top Magazine Covers.

A dress from Miu Miu’s Fall 2010 ready-to-wear collection has caused quite a stir in the fashion community.  The dress, which ranges in price from $2,300 to $4,900,  made it on to the covers of  three of the most read fashion magazines in the world.  Eva Mendes was seen wearing a yellow version for the July issue of W,  while model Freja Beha Erichsen is in a tangerine version for the August cover of British Vogue, and Lily Allen is seen in a lace lilac version for the July cover of Elle UK.  I bet the people at rival mags Elle and Vogue aren’t too impressed, but Miu Miu has for sure received a lot of publicity from this incident, and the dress has become quite popular!

You have to take these things in your stride, [but] obviously I’d rather it wasn’t on a major rival.”Lorraine Candy, Editor, Elle UK.

Personally,  I like the lace lilac dress Lily is wearing on the cover of Elle UK.  Which do you prefer?

Lily Allen’s Fashion Reality Show

Since deciding to take a break from the music scene,  British singer Lily Allen has been actively pursuing a career in fashion. Not too long ago, she founded a vintage store called  ‘Lucy in Disguise’ with her half-sister Sarah Owen.  Her reality show will revolve around Lily and the store which is located in London’s West End.  Due out early next year, a Channel 4 spokesperson confirmed that it is indeed happening, but that a name for the show hasn’t yet been decided upon.
